How Are Glass Space Pendants Made?

In a previous blog I covered how you can get started blowing glass. The next thing you might want to know is how to create some of the cool items you see out there. So today let's talk about glass space pendants.

Glass Space Pendant How to Guide

There are a million ways to do anything, so I'm just going to cover one way that you could do this. I don't want to bore the non glassblowers out there, so I'm not going to go super in depth. If you want to know more feel free to email me at dnlbourgeois@gmail.com, if there's an interest in step by step instructions I could do that in the future.

The stars in these pendants are actually made by vaporizing silver. If you put a silver wire in the flame, it will boil and spit little pieces of silver that get captured on a piece of glass. You can then cover that with another layer of clear glass, add more silver, more glass, etc until you've build up a number of layers.

Opal Encasement

You may want to add an opal into your piece, everyone thinks opals are neat so it's fun to add in a few. All you need is a tube of glass, drop the opal in, then melt the tube until the opal is encased. To put the opal into the piece simply heat up the glass and press the opal in.

Fun Variations

You can do all sorts of things from here to make the piece more interesting. Pure gold can give you all sorts of color variations, you can try mixing it with the silver, or you can do alternating layers of gold and silver with clear glass in between. Either way it's vaporized the same way the silver is. The difference is I usually don't boil gold, instead I slowly introduce it in the flame so it vaporizes evenly.

And there you have it! If you're interested in purchasing a piece like this, click here to go to my shop.
